Just Another BS Job Posting

There are NO jobs out there

Stumbled onto the copy job below this evening and, because YUD is here for you and has time and even a weird penchant for maths and such every now and again (must be an ME thing), she’s just going to point out that in order to make $25 per hour on $3.50 an article, you will need to be copy editing (and fact-checking, in some cases) 7.1428571 articles per hour.

Which, assuming these articles are more than 100 words apiece, or the copy editors desired do not have superhuman speed reading powers, is kinda crazy. We didn’t even do that at my last weekly! And I might rather scoop poo, to tell the truth. (Good arm workout.)

Here’s the full listing, for funs’ sake. As usual, names changed for the innocents. If interested, see Mediabistro.

TK Co. is recruiting experienced freelance line editors and copy editors to edit our growing library of informative articles. TK Co. publishes thousands of articles a day, and our content reaches a highly passionate audience that demands accuracy and quality.

We are looking for dedicated editors who can deliver quality work in a timely manner and are comfortable occasionally communicating with writers. Some fact checking is also required.

Ideal candidates will have 5 years of demonstrated editing or copyediting experience with a newspaper, magazine or book publisher.

This is an online, freelance position that allows you to work part-time or full-time. While your schedule is flexible, we do require our editors to commit to working a minimum of 12 hours per week for part-time and 40 hours for full-time.

We pay a flat fee of $3.50 per article, with most editors averaging $20-$25 per hour, paid on a weekly basis via PayPal.

To apply, please upload your resume via our online application

Does anybody actually apply for these? Is no one else upset that the going rate for 5 years of experience and timely delivery to a “highly passionate audience” (ehr) is, oh, a rather suspect 20-25 big ones per hour – paid via PayPal?

Tell me, please: Are YUD’s standards too high?

You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

I’ve seen stuff like this recently too. And it pisses me off. I feel like I’m trying to get back into a job market that’s just moving backwards.
