Apologies, my friends, as unforseen complications (aka, brutal hangover plus sustained loss of Internet connection) led to my lack of posting Friday’s Dad-vice. Don’t worry, though, because here it is, and what’s better, really, than a Friday? A Saturday, of course.
Speaking of Saturdays, on this particular one I am blogging from the penthouse of Driftwood on the Ocean, an Amagansett hotel. We are indeed on the ocean, but it’s a bit cloudy right now, which I know will come as unfortunate news to several of my party upon their rising.
However, since I went to the dermatologist and told her about how I burned my scalp in the sun over the Fourth of July weekend (to which she responded, “We all suffer from thinning hair as we get older,”) my thirst for a Hawaiian-Tropic tan has subsided a bit. What I am thirsty for is coffee, and although there is a pot and a filter and even, perhaps, the faint scent of coffee wafting through the sea-soaked air, I cannot locate a single bean in the kitchen, within or without its many retro-styled cabinets. Sigh.

Found, this morning, scrawled on the back of the homework for the Dreamweaver class (homework I am considering not doing, as I don’t have Dreamweaver and, more offensively, the teacher welcomed us the first day by saying, “I teach by the Socratic method, which means, if you ask me, ‘How do I open the properties inspector?’ I will answer, ‘How do you think you open the properties inspector?’”):
Thank you sweetie for everything.
You kept falling asleep so I left you be.
Very peaceful.
Nice meeting you.
Take Care.

I got an email today (actually it went to spam, gotta fix that)…from an organization I used to belong to back in my full-time freelance days. (And which I will likely rejoin at some point down the road when the COBRA runs out, as they offer a multitude of health insurance offerings, a 401(k), and intriguing subway ads, among other things.)

What idiot publisher (who once, a long, long time ago, thought she was EIC and fired everyone and then put out the worst-selling issue ever of TK magazine) once responded thusly to a certain call to action?
FROM NY OFFICE: Hey everyone,
Just letting everyone know that I will be cleaning out the fridge tomorrow; so if you have something that you don’t want thrown out please let me know!

When this jobless lady celebrated her birthday in style at Water Taxi Beach, Long Island City, YUD Fashion Director Lindsey Hunter Lopez was there to ask the important questions.
Karen Berg loves her cuffed white cargo shorts. “Look, they’re too big!” she points out. “Comfy.” (There’s plenty of time to work out when you don’t have a job.) A flowy black tank completes her carefree ensemble. She has shoes somewhere in the sand, but she doesn’t need them at this beach bar.
While I interrogate her about her choices, this former health editor sips her favorite accessory, a vodka soda, and shows off a vibrant red manicure.

We all know what YUD wears when she’s—how shall we say?—got no place employmenty to go. But what about the rest of us 361,000? And further afield from that, in other cities and states and countries, what are the unemployed donning before they head out into the big, bad world each day … or, no judgments, when they make no departure from their tender abodes at all?

Lindsey Hunter Lopez: EMPLOYED
Thank heavens we are now in the occasionally manicured hands of YUD’s new Fashion Director, Lindsey Hunter Lopez, who will be offering us weekly glimpses at the faces—and fashions—of the recession with her Unemployment Lookbook.

In the last 24 hours, I have gotten the last 3 emails. (I’ve gotten more than just 3 emails, don’t worry, but let’s focus on these for a moment.)
I mean, of course, we all get spam. Generally I don’t even open it. But in this case, I was intrigued. Maybe bored. The names seemed oddly familiar. The subject lines compelling. Maybe they were unconventional job offers!
At any rate, I opened them.

It’s good to know that people are still coming up with ideas, theories, inventions even, ITE.
I went to Kushi Q, the Japanese place near my soon-to-be-completed freelance gig, for lunch on Friday. I enjoy the flexibility of choice offered at this dining establishment, and also the omega-3s.

Unfairness of unfairnesses! So, I am taking in all kinds of freelance work now, cause that’s what you do when you’re a laid-off editor who still needs to pay her rent and such, and since I work on Monday (my final day of the Great Pineapple Project, whoo-hoo!) I won’t have time to meet another impending deadline unless I put a big dent in it today. Thus, I really must hunker down and get this proofreading done.
It’s not such an onerous task, but it does involve reading some 750 captions, and making corrections as needed. Which seems like something that might go on forever, particularly when the day is sunny and it’s Sunday and I might have had a bit too much to drink last night, meaning today’s focus is more on what mortifying things I Tweeted or texted or did than on, say, how to best phrase the 25 words of an already rather cryptic photo caption.
