WordPress, I Take Back What I Said…

Dear Readers—my apologies for this nerdsville techy post. Most likely, you’re out in the sun enjoying your extended weekend, and won’t even notice. I’ll write something real special for you tomorrow, I promise. And maybe this will help some errant blogger such as myself. If I can do a bit of good, it’s all worthwhile…
Ooh, I love it when I can (sort of) figure stuff out and feel smart. Or when things you think are going to be a big pain in the ass just turn out to be kinda easy.
Allow me to explain. Yesterday I got this rather frightening warning to upgrade asap to the next version (2.8.4) of WordPress (that’s the system upon which this blog is built, for you laymen) because hackers are getting in through the “back door” (eek!) and doing bad things to blogs.
Well, no one likes that.
So, lazily, I pressed the upgrade button, and, as had happened when I last upgraded, a variety of issues became immediately apparent. Of course, I hadn’t backed up before pressing said button. I know, I know.
Annoyed at my hasty decision, I closed my laptop and went to Grand Central, where I had a train to catch to transport me to the land of many pools. But I couldn’t get my poor compromised blog out of my mind. Ugh. Would I have to reinstall?
When I finally returned home I was a few glasses plus a travel cup of wine in, and not in the shape to confront issues either computer or otherwise, so I went to sleep preparing to deal with frustrations in the am.
And when I woke, yes, frustrations were in full force. I couldn’t use Photodropper, which allows me to place all of those adorable pics you love so much. I couldn’t access the Visual Editor, which allows me to put the appropriate accents in résumé. My widgets were frozen, and you know what that means.
Angrily, I tweeted that all of these upgrades were a farce, and this was just crap! However, I then found a nice discussion panel (WordPress is really good about having lots of these) that advised me to deactivate and reactivate plugins (fancy things that let you do fancy things) and—whaddya know?—everything just got fixed right up.
WP, I’m sorry. You were right, I was wrong. I’ll listen next time.
And hackers, if you’re a’knocking at my back door, I have a pit bull, and he’s hungry.
Until the next upgrade…
Kisses,
YUD
