This week has been a red-letter week of sorts, at least in my book. Allow me to tell you why.

1. I bought a new shower curtain. Finally. And it’s pretty darn cute. Not to mention, my old one was hella moldy. Here’s a pic.

Holy Crap, I’m a Capitalist

Heeeyyyyyy, Captains of Industry…

I don’t know when it happened, but somewhere along the way, I became a staunch defender of capitalism. I actually believe that people who bring in money should make more money, and that governments should allow the principals of supply and demand to work themselves out, and not cap salaries or get too involved with regulation.

9021-Oh, I’m Glad I’m Not You….(Spoiler Alert)

I have a new guilty pleasure. I have been watching the new 90210 again, after swearing off it last season when it just seemed too stupid and the girls were too skinny and it didn’t compare at all to the classic.

(Brandon, Dylan, Brenda, Kelly … you really had an impact on me. That is, before you went to college and moved into the beach house and everything got a little silly, what with David on a mix of uppers and downers and Brandon dating the chancellor’s exhibitionist daughter, and Dylan’s dad blowing up but not and Kelly and Donna surviving endless fires/rapes/stalkers/cults…)

Those of you who don’t reside in New York City don’t know the joy of watching Pat Kiernan from NY1 in the morning. See, some New Yorkers are so very busy and important that they need to have the news read to them as opposed to reading it for themselves. Time is money, after all!

Pat provides this service with a sardonic demeanor that pairs exceedingly well with the first coffee of the morning, and even though I am not one of those busy and super-duper-important business ladies, I tune in anyway. Unless I don’t get up until 10.

I just got word of this cheap art festival—this weekend in NYC—where everything is $50 and under! This is a good deal, my friends. If you like art, that is, or free refreshments. And who doesn’t?

So go stimulate the economy by snagging some deals!

Weep for the Gray Lady

Sede del NY Times

It’s a sad day at the New York Times today. The announcement was made that 100 people in the newsroom (currently 1250 folks) will have to accept a buyout by the end of the year—or there will be layoffs to reach that number.

Somehow appropriately, editor Bill Keller was out sick (this whole thing would make me sick, too) and so delivered the news by email, which you can read here.

Village Voice Media currently has several postings for an “email czar” on Mediabistro.com. I fancy myself no such thing, but it would be fun to call myself a czar, and I kinda wondered exactly what an email czar would do on a day-to-day basis.

So I clicked.

Dying for Work

Did y’all hear? Some poor fellow in California died on his balcony (a single gunshot wound to the eye, apparently) and was there for four days before his neighbors called the cops. Because they thought he was part of a Halloween decoration.

That’s not really going out with a bang.

Remember that guy George Turkelbaum, a proofreader (a job close to my heart; it could have been me!) who expired at his desk and went unnoticed by coworkers for five days because “he habitually came in early and worked late and kept to himself”? Fortunately, George turned out to be a bit of an urban legend.

Calvin Trillin on Why We Don’t Need to Feel Old and Depressed Because We are Jobless and 33 When the New Yorker has a 26-Year-Old Managing Editor

Posted in Job Search | No Comments »

I love this man, not only for his amazing writing over the years (if you want a good cry, and a glimpse into a beautiful relationship, read About Alice), but for this.

He’s right, you know.

Managing editor means something different at virtually every publication, from print to digital, that you might run into. Folks are generally kinda impressed by it because it sounds “fancy,” but sometimes it’s no more than a glorified schedule-minder/accountant/traffic cop. And sometimes it’s much, much more.
