Merry Christmas

Christmas at the D-house. We’re full of traditions here, including partying it up on Christmas Eve, ripping through all the presents under the tree (taking turns on delivery based on whomever is wearing the Santa hat), drinking until we can’t stand (at least, me, but that was I think due to my dad’s Manhattan, with which I started the night), and generally rabble-rousing and having fun.

We used to have the tradition of always having oyster stew on Christmas Eve, but that’s gone by the by.

At any rate, ’twas a good one last night. B&S cooked for us, a meal that included scallops cooked in bacon grease on a bed of rocket, a pork loin with apricots and pine nuts, and muchas wine.

Mom made a flourless chocolate cake, and Dad made coffee, and I just ate it all, and accidentally broke a water glass while attempting to pour water for the table. Someone has to be the klutz of the family.

Take from last night includes: wallet that was not delivered in time, tote bag that came as distraction gift because wallet was not delivered in time, $100 bill (presumably for wallet), red cashmere sweater, 2 soft scarves, fancy lip moisturizers (if you know me at all, you know this is a great gift), dull headache.

Now it’s rainy and gray yet cozy and I’m enjoying more coffee, which begins to quell the ache in my head from last night’s exuberances. We await D tradition 2: the unveiling of the stockings, which often include goodies both surprising and hilarious. And then, the annual eating of the stuffed shells. Yum.

Another Christmas tradition for a long time was watching the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer stop-motion TV special narrated by Burl Ives. Fortunately, it’s on YouTube for easy viewing throughout the year. Enjoy. Maybe you want to be a dentist, maybe you have a glowing red nose. But you, too, are independent! Merry Merry.
