Once Upon a Taco Salad

Today is a day of endings, of things I’ve always considered permanent being ripped from me, taken before their time (even if I haven’t thought about them much in the past couple of years, that doesn’t mean I’d forgotten them, and anyway, never you mind about that).

After waking to the news that the Coreys have been split asunder (and what does one do with just one? They’re like socks!) I have been texted by a friend that the gloriously faux-retro Comfort Diner located on 45th Street between 2nd and 3rd Aves in midtown M’hattan has shuttered. “This recession is ruining all my favorite things!” she says.

Googling proves that her report is, alas, true.

After more than 14 great years on E. 45th St. our lease is expiring and The Comfort Diner will be closing our doors for the final time on Monday, February 15th at 4:00 PM.

Back in the old days at TK-magazine, we might pop over to the comfortably located Comfort (just below our once-hailed occasionally air-conditionless offices) for a tuna melt, a burger, or maybe that taco salad thing, that was good. Their glasses were of the red plastic variety that I grew to love at Pizza Huts of my youth. Their flatware was bendy, like the kind I ate from in middle school.

Of course, TK-magazine has been dead now for going on a year and a half, and the remains of that taco salad I ate with aluminum and washed down with a fountain soda are probably finally out of my system, replaced by some nasty Indian concoction I consumed during the late-night copy shift at a dubiously still-alive mag last eve.

HOWEVER! There is light at the end of this tunnel, my friends. Although we can’t bring back C.H. (and I’m sure some will try), C.D. may live to serve again. Per their website:

The good news is that when one door closes, another often opens. This is true for us. We will be relocating only a block away on 44th St. between 3rd and Lexington Avenues. We will likely be opening there in less than a month.

Additionally, our Staten Island location will be opening VERY soon!

Phew.
