Why is today so long?

And why do I wish that it were shorter, thereby cutting my time on this earth down by several hours if only so that I could be at home watching The Real Housewives of New Jersey instead of here looking up at the MetLife building and checking the clock periodically between uppercasing and lowercasing the letters in certain charts which must not be mentioned by name and offering the occasional “Bless you” when a neighboring freelancer sneezes and wondering if perhaps I should have said “gesundheit” instead, because who am I to assume I know what prayers he might or might not be saying in his head?

An Unemployed Life Worth Living

For an unemployed person, I sure have a lot of work to do all of a sudden. What happened? It’s a gorgeous sunny Sunday and I’m inside copy editing and editing and doing a mishmash of freelance work that I didn’t have time to do during the day because I was busy-little-beeing at my 3-week assignment in midtown.

This is not a complaint, but rather, a reflection of the comfort, even joy, I feel that despite all the gloom and doom, there is freelance work out there! Hoorah! Maybe not so much as there was back in the glory days of 2005, but there are still bits and pieces to be had, and not always of the badly paying, tedious, and soul-sucking variety.

Tales from the Office, Part I

Glorious midtown, 6:15 pm

This marks my second day in the NYC office of TK publishers, where I have a 3-week freelance copy editing assignment.

Yesterday not much was ready for me, and the blessed saint who hired me allowed me to go home early after a quick perusal of the word list and style guide. I thankfully agreed and departed by 3 to hit the gym and then nurse my wounds from Sunday night.
