As much as it sucks to stay home and wallow on the couch all day or force yourself to occasionally look at the computer and maybe press a few keys when you’re sick, it is way way way way worse to have to drag yourself out of bed, scan your grey visage in the mirror, groan, pour some orange juice down your throat (which cools the fiery depths temporarily), figure out what to wear that isn’t going to make your bones ache (sweats?), and struggle to midtown where your freelance ME gig awaits, and there are irritating Helvetica issues to be resolved.

Why am I sick, cruel world??? Why? (Imagine pounding fists and flailing appendages, except I’m too weak to do more than sit here and type, and maybe twitch my eye a little.)

I have a strange confession. One of my favorite parts of going into the office these past three freelance weeks has been my my commute. In particular, taking the bus up 1st Avenue to the UN, and then walking to 3rd from there, often stopping on the way for an iced coffee from the Amish establishment that is not Amish at all (it’s run by Turks, fyi, but “Amish sounded better,” according to a certain cab driver. How’s that for branding?).

Some of you may have read Adam Gopnik’s piece on riding the bus, how he adopted it after ignoring it for years in favor of the subway and, in fact, finds it a highly soothing pursuit for a variety of reasons. (If you haven’t, read it, it’s good stuff.)

This delightful image is from the even more delightful farmer’s market at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, which takes place year-round on Wednesdays on 47th and 2nd in midtown. This location, I admit, is very near my freelance place of occupation, else I would hardly be visiting midtown on a Wednesday.

A farmer’s market is a lovely place to go for the unemployed (as well as the recession-compromised employed), for it offers great bargains! I, for instance, purchased 4 kirby cucumbers and 4 small squashes for $3.15. (My purchase of two drinks and a tub of almonds at the nearby Amish market—which is not Amish at all, but that’s another story—was, by comparison, nearly $10. So you see.)
